I work with my boyfriend!

Now that statement for some people can make alarm bells go off. Starting up a business is a risk in itself, let alone introducing a relationship into one! When telling people I work with my partner, I get a lot of mixed reactions, some positive and some negative.

For me, I have grown up with parents running a business together, so it's already quite the norm for me. However, I know this isn't the case for a lot of people.

“I don’t know how you do it?”, “I definitely couldn’t work with my partner!”, “How are you not at each others throats all day?!” I'm often asked.

Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t always easy figuring out our work-life balance. But there are reasons as to why our relationship works in our business.

1️⃣ We have complementary skills, meaning we have very separate roles which give us our own individual purposes in the company.

2️⃣ We’ve grown up passionate about filmmaking and wanting to always create something whether it be films or drawings. We’ve both always dreamt of having our own business, and our values and aspirations are very much the same.

3️⃣ Open and honest communication is key.

Being business partners with my partner has made it easier to adjust since you already know each other better, therefore, communication is more honest, which results in better decision making for the success of the business. Our communication and listening skills constantly improve in working together and also on a personal level.

At the end of the day, it works differently for everyone and their relationships. It really depends on the people and their individuality. It’s all about the qualities and support each partner can bring into a business to make it work. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, and that's ok!

It definitely gives us a new dimension into our relationship. We work together and live together, but somehow, it just works! Igloo wouldn’t be Igloo if it wasn't us two behind the name.

Could you work with your partner?🤔
